Unhindered Faith
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV)
Student leadership at Alberta Bible College (ABC) is structured around the four foundational practices of study, service, prayer, and community.
Study – Knowing
This priority focuses on knowing God through intentional study of scripture, theology and spiritual writings, with particular emphasis on the integration of learning and living. While part of this will be addressed through classroom instruction, point leaders will:
- Provide an example in study habits
- Identify a small team of students who will provide tutoring as needed
- Organize study parties for various courses as needed
- Be aware of “academic stress” among the student body
- Serve as liaisons between students and faculty in matters of academics
- Serve as TA’s as needed
- Organize a used book sale each September
Service – Doing
This priority focuses on embodying the gospel in tangible ways, both inside and beyond the ABC community. Points leaders will:
- Express a servant attitude
- Develop and oversee several hospitality (custodial) teams to care for the college building
- Encourage and support students in their service assignments
- Provide assistance in helping students discern their areas of service (vocation)
- Organize community service projects as needed
- Be involved in planning the January Prayer & Ministry Retreat
Prayer – Being
This priority focuses on creating space to be with God, giving particular attention to times and places for prayer and for worship (both corporate and individual). Points leaders will:
- Be committed to a life of prayer
- Develop several teams to lead morning and evening prayers throughout the school year
- Organize weekly chapel gatherings (which will rotate through the priorities of prayer, study, service and community)
- Plan additional prayer gatherings as needed
- Introduce a variety of ancient ways of prayer
- Care for the prayer room
- Be involved in planning the retreats in September and January
Community
Each of these priorities (study, service and prayer) will be done within the context of intentionally living life together. Points leaders will:
- Be well connected within the student body
- Organize periodic gatherings that bring the student body together
- Organize year round inter-mural competitions
- Be available to students as needed
- Help mediate conflicts and others concerns as needed
- Be involved in planning the September Prayer & Community Retreat
- Be responsible for student body communications and finances (this could be done by either a point leader or an administrative assistant)
Student Grievance Policy and Procedure
One of the most important and often neglected components of community life is that of conflict resolution. Conflict is inevitable within any human community; what matters is how we work through opposing perspectives in love. The student Grievance Policy at ABC outlines our own biblical and practical approach to conflict resolution in love.
The Student Grievance Policy provides the structure for students to exercise the right of grievance between and amongst students, as well as the structure to grieve the actions of staff and instructors. The structure may also be applied to Board policy. Copies of the policy are available from the Student Development Director or the General Office. Our desire is that the majority of grievances will be resolved by prayerfully living out step one.
The Grievance process summarized:
- Go directly to the person with whom you have conflict;
- Seek friendly intervention or mediation;
- Request decision by an appointed group or arbitration.
