What you need to teach TESL
In Canada
Typically, teaching ESL in Canada requires a Bachelor’s degree, in any subject, with a minimum 120 hours of TESOL training. It is rare that people with no teaching experience beyond the TESOL practicum secure paid employment at an ESL school. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you add teaching experience to your resume through volunteer teaching. Additionally, at Canadian colleges for international students, overseas experience is preferred. It is important to note that in order to teach kindergarten to grade 12 in Canada a person must possess a valid provincial teaching certificate.International Teaching
Even though a Bachelor’s degree may not be required for overseas teaching, in general, the higher the education level attained, the higher the job level and salary and the more opportunity for variety you will have in your work.In the past students holding any TESOL qualifications have found that it opens more doors overseas than holding a BA alone. Increasingly, however, employers are looking for graduates of recognized TESOL programs.
