Letters to Marc about Jesus is a textbook for used in “Life and Teachings of Jesus.”
“The mystery of the spiritual life is that Jesus desires to meet us in the seclusion of our own heart, to make his love known to us there, to free us from our fears, and to make our own deepest self known to us… Each time you let the love of God penetrate deeper into your heart… it leads to a love of ourselves that enables us to give whole-hearted love to our fellow human beings. In the seclusion of our hearts we learn to know the hidden presence of God; and with that spiritual knowledge we can lead a loving life.” – Henri Nouwen, “The Only Necessary Thing”, pp 70-71 (originally from “Letters to Marc about Jesus”)

Heard an encouraging message today in chapel on viewing trials as opportunities for growth. The speaker, one of our student leaders, made the point that the gardener is always closest to the plant when he/she is pruning it. How might this challenge your perception of trials where you are at today?

To all our Students, Staff, Friends, and Supporters in the Calgary area and beyond:
As we discussed our 51 Shoeboxes, we noticed that they could use a boost in their contents and wanted to offer you the opportunity to contribute. On our budget we were able to put quite a variety of things in each box, however they are kind of missing bigger ticket items (a stuffed animal, a t-shirt, socks, a notepad, or a picture book) that would fill them better. If you would like to donate such an item before Friday, here is your opportunity. Our boxes are for both girls and boys ages 5 – 9. Thank you for considering being a part of this.

The staff at ABC are working through “Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership,” by Ruth Haley Barton. A question she poses in the chapter, “Living With Limits,” is quite thought-provoking: “Someone has said that we are not human beings trying to become spiritual beings but spiritual beings trying to become human. Think about that for a moment. It’s true, isn’t it? And it raises a great question: How are you doing at being human?” How is your finiteness forcing you to rely on our Infinite God today?

ABC students showed great enthusiasm and spirit this past Saturday as they packed 51 Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes while the wind and snow slowed things down in the city! Your generosity with your time and energy was totally encouraging. Col. 3:23-24 “So no matter what your task is, work hard. Always do your best as the Lord’s servant, not as man’s, because you know your reward is the Lord’s inheritance. You serve the Lord, the Anointed One…” Thank you for serving so willingly!

Building on the message we heard in Chapel yesterday, here is a quote from a pretty well known theologian:
“Courage is fear that has said its prayers.” –Karl Barth.
What fears are you facing today? Face them in prayer, keeps your eyes fixed on Jesus, and Take Courage!

This morning our students and staff were blessed to have Kelly Carter, Lead Minister of Calgary Church of Christ and ABC Adjunct Professor, share an expository sermon in chapel from our theme passage: Matthew 14:22-33. Here is one great take-away:
“The crucial question (from this passage) is, ‘Is it You?’ and the crucial answer is, ‘It is I.’ Real Christian courage comes from that kind of dialogue between the human heart and Jesus Christ.”

So you know: Each week our small groups get together on Tuesday mornings and pray. We pray for a specific country using Operation World’s prayer videos and country profiles. We also pray for various aspects of our school and student body. This week our Student Prayer Leader shared a video. Be Blessed!
