Evangel – Christmas 2015

Articles

Dear Alumni and Friends of ABC,

This will be our first Christmas in Calgary. Pat and I are happy to be here and working among you for the good of the kingdom of God and for the sake of the world. Because we are in this together, I would like to share a reflection with you.

We recently attended ABC’s Christmas Banquet and I was pleased and excited by what I saw and experienced. Gathered around tables, students, staff, and faculty were visiting enthusiastically. That evening we prayed together, listened to the Word together, laughed together, sang together, and shared our lives together. Together. It has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

We experienced so much more than another end-of-the-year Christmas party. I saw something deeper and richer. For those present, something marvellous was realized. Community had been forged out of our individual lives. I saw students who had become deeper since I first met them a few months ago. I saw faculty and staff who had poured their hearts and souls into the work of the college doing precisely that yet again. Behind the scenes were alumni, board members, and volunteers working unobtrusively to make sure this celebration of togetherness happened. Why does all this matter?

The answer is simple, really. Because investing in the future of the church is worth it. For that reason I want to reach out to you and invite you to participate with us in God’s mission by making a gift to the college. Our mission remains equipping people for effective service and witness for Christ.

If you are among those who regularly give to the college, I want to thank you for making it possible to do the work we do. If you have questions, let me know, I would be glad to visit with you. If you have not given in a while, or have never given, but have thought about it, I would love to chat with you. You see—we do this together.

Finally, on behalf of ABC, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Together in God’s Mission,

Stan Helton

President

Stan is the current president of ABC, and has recently joined us with his wife, Pat Helton. They have one daughter Rachel, who is married. She and her husband just finished a short-term mission trip to Zambia. Rachel is completing her Masters in Theology through Abilene Christian University. Stan has earned degrees from Oklahoma Christian University (BA), Abilene Christian University (MS, MDiv, DMin), and the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (ThM, PhD). He has served in a variety of ministry settings including New Orleans and Chicago; he taught for six years at Western Christian College in Regina, Saskatchewan where he also served as Dean. Pat is a teacher whose specialty is Adapted Physical Education. She has served people with special needs most of her career, most recently among the urban poor of New Orleans. Stan and Pat are excited to have returned to Canada and seeing what God will do with them next in this mission.
