Message from the President

Dr. Stan Helton

When the disciples of Jesus, James and John, requested the most powerful seats in Jesus’ coming kingdom—though at the time they did not know the true nature of that kingdom— Jesus was clear that leadership would look different among his disciples:

“But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:43–45 NIV).

Here to ServeWhen I consider what this means for Alberta Bible College, I’m reminded that ABC exists to serve. We seek therefore to serve God’s kingdom and then churches who seek first that kingdom. Furthermore, we want to serve our students, both current and past, as a resource for continued work in God’s kingdom. Because we seek to be used by God, we work to position the college to serve the needs of our local community and communities where we have alumni around the world.

We believe strongly that Jesus is our model for a life well lived, and for that reason, we do not seek to be served but to serve and, like Jesus, to give our lives so others can live. In this Evangel, we celebrate those who have been prepared to serve in the Spirit of Jesus.

Stan is the current president of ABC, and has recently joined us with his wife, Pat Helton. They have one daughter Rachel, who is married. She and her husband just finished a short-term mission trip to Zambia. Rachel is completing her Masters in Theology through Abilene Christian University. Stan has earned degrees from Oklahoma Christian University (BA), Abilene Christian University (MS, MDiv, DMin), and the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (ThM, PhD). He has served in a variety of ministry settings including New Orleans and Chicago; he taught for six years at Western Christian College in Regina, Saskatchewan where he also served as Dean. Pat is a teacher whose specialty is Adapted Physical Education. She has served people with special needs most of her career, most recently among the urban poor of New Orleans. Stan and Pat are excited to have returned to Canada and seeing what God will do with them next in this mission.
