Summit Summary: Like Jesus
Evangel – Summer 2017
Western Canadian Leadership Summit, May 8–10, 2017, was a spiritually refreshing time of recalibrating our walk with Jesus. Randy Harris, the spiritual director for the College of Biblical Studies at Abilene Christian University, brought a series of presentations, around the theme “Like Jesus.” His lessons included “Praying Like Jesus,” “Mentoring like Jesus,” “Dying like Jesus,” and finally “Partying Like Jesus.” These messages were interspersed with engaging Table Talk among the participants around these themes.
Marnie Hoetmer, who serves as an adjunct professor at ABC, gave us a summary and review of James K. A. Smith’s How (Not) to Be Secular, a work that seeks to help Christians locate themselves within Western culture. Additionally, John Nicholson, who mentored ABC students this past year, led us in a time of mutual prayer on Tuesday afternoon and Keith Shields, executive pastor at Bow Valley Christian Church, hosted a time of “Tribal Connections” where those in attendance shared news of ministry happening across Canada from east to west.
Participants included leaders from all three streams of the Restoration movement as well as representation from the Brethren. We are grateful to the sponsors who make this possible each year. Besides Alberta Bible College, sponsors include Lifeline Christian Ministries, the Pension Fund of the Christian Church, Church of Christ Development Company, Vision Ministries Canada, and one anonymous sponsor.
