The unprecedented interest in and focus on the Spirit of God in our time, combined with the unprecedented explosion of Christian faith throughout the Global South, should tell us something. Perhaps for us in the West it is at least this:

“Only by attending to the Spirit are we going to be able to move beyond sterile, rationalistic, powerless religion and recover the intimacy with God our generation longs for”(Clark Pinnock, Flame of Love, 19).

In the mission of God, Scripture bears witness to two sendings: the sending of the Son and the sending of the Spirit. The mission of Christ is set alongside the mission of the Spirit (see Gal. 4:4-6). God sent his Son to redeem and make possible adoption to sonship, and God sent the Spirit of his Son to us, who enables us to call out “Abba, Father.” Further, Paul stated, “No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit” (1 Cor. 12:3). The mission of the Spirit, among other things, is to initiate people into relationship with the Trinity: the Father as Abba and Jesus as Lord.

The mission of Christ and the mission of the Spirit are “intertwined and equal; one is not major and the other minor.… The two are partners in the work of redemption.” (Clark Pinnock, Flame of Love, 82).

Their missions are distinct, but Christ and the Spirit are each deeply engaged and present in the mission of the other.
